Pontikonisi – From Odysseus’ Ship to a Lush Green Paradise
Pontikonisi – A Must-Visit Landmark in Corfu
Pontikonisi is one of the most famous and enchanting attractions in Corfu, captivating visitors with its natural beauty and mythical past. Located at the entrance of Chalikiopoulou Lagoon (once the ancient Hyllaic Harbor), this tiny, verdant islet is a strictly protected natural reserve, home to rare plant species and lush greenery. Due to its fragile ecosystem, access to Pontikonisi is highly restricted—only during religious celebrations such as August 6th, when the island’s Byzantine chapel, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, hosts its annual feast. Even then, visitors are only allowed entry for religious purposes.
Another unique opportunity to visit Pontikonisi comes on Bright Monday (Easter Monday), when the Viros parish procession makes its way to the island. After a sacred liturgy, worshippers board small boats to reach Pontikonisi, offering visitors yet another compelling reason to experience Easter in Corfu. On other days, visitors can approach the islet briefly, in designated areas on the rocks, under the watchful supervision of local preservation officers who ensure the island’s delicate ecosystem remains undisturbed.
